Porn for Women Finally Arrives (Thanks to Oprah, Sex and the City, and Chronicle Books)

Over a year ago Chronicle Books published a book titled “Porn for Women” that engendered so much controversy, that if you didn’t know, you would assume it contained content like the free porn for women list we just published at GameLink. In fact the book featured photos of men, fully clothed doing housework. One of the top complaints they received, as reported on the blog post “Porn for Women (But Apparently Not All Women)” was that readers felt they had assumed that these images
“will appeal to all women because women respond sexually as one robotic Borg.”

Women use Men as a Floormat in this fetish porn movie (NSFW) In the spirit of offering women the full range of options for their sexual pleasure we urge Chronicle to approve our comment for the benefit of readers who were so miffed at their suggestions. Surely this move, like the list we offered this week, will bring about lots more uproar. If you are offended by the idea that women might want to watch actual pornography, please see the above link and enjoy Chronicle’s immensely popular book.

In case you are tempted to write the rest of us off as fringe deviants, I offer this: On August 4th, 2008, Oprah Winfrey hosted a surprising discussion on her daily TV show, entitled ‘237 Reasons to Have Sex.’ On the show she talks to women who watch porn, therapists who recommend porn for the 43% of women who experience sexual dysfunction, and married people who enjoy porn for couples. According to the show, $1 out of every $4 spent on porn is spent by a woman. Well, if porn is like anything else Oprah touches, we expect that figure to rise. Couple that with shows and blockbuster films about sexual liberation of women like “Sex and the City,” and “Swingtown” and we see a new market for porn emerging.

Contrast these events with another milestone for porn…the demise of Playgirl Magazine. Over on Boinkology, one of our favorite sex blogs, there’s much speculation as to why this occurred.
